In 2000, MGM Resorts International became the first gaming company to voluntarily declare a formal diversity initiative as a matter of integrity and as a business imperative. The premise for our declaration is a simple reality: our Company is a microcosm of our world. Among our employees, our guests, our business partners, and our suppliers, the four corners of our planet intersect. To achieve our Company mission to entertain the human race, we embrace diversity and innovation to inspire excellence. Diversity and inclusion anchor a culture of mutual respect among our diverse collection of extraordinary people–our greatest strength. We are all unique individuals, but we are all connected and interdependent.
We engage the contributions of individual team members to fuel ultimate teamwork. We strive to leverage our powerhouse of diverse ideas and perspectives into results-oriented synergies that drive peak performance in our delivery of superior guest service and memorable guest experiences. We combine consistency in policy with flexibility in practice and methods to instill the values of diversity and inclusion throughout our enterprise.
In response to the social injustices taking place around the United States, MGM Resorts launched an initiative called “Focused on What Matters: Courageous Conversations.” The goal of the conversations is to create actionable ideas on how MGM Resorts can live up to its values and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion both within the company and across our communities. We have conducted sessions with employee cohorts including African Americans, Latinx and Hispanic, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, Women and LGBTQ+.
Members of the cohorts had candid conversations with MGM Resorts leadership including MGM Resorts CEO and President, Bill Hornbuckle and MGM Resorts Corporate Social Responsibility Committee Chair, Rose McKinney-James. The employees were encouraged to ask questions, share views and reflect on what is happening in our country and our company.
These conversations allowed MGM Resorts leadership to better understand the gaps within our company and our community, and how we can better serve specific groups of people. Working groups were created after the initial conversations to determine key takeaways and move the needle in areas like hiring, benefits, internal programing, upward mobility, community outreach and more.
Since this program was established in 2020, it has allowed MGM Resorts to move more intentionally and purposefully in directions that are most impactful for our employees and those in the communities we serve.
Our Employee Network Groups (ENGs) are a cornerstone of our culture. They reinforce inclusion teachings and practices, while providing communications and support networks for our employees. Our ENGs are hubs for leadership development and collaborative teamwork in support of business objectives.
They are designed to develop and strengthen relationships among employees with common identities, interests and issues, share valuable knowledge and information about career paths and development at our Company, provide mentoring, and support various company initiatives.
